Little Steps to Big Data - Intro to Big Data

Sep 30, 2013 Big Data Aaron Crouch

Little Steps to Big DataThere’s a lot of buzz these days about “Big Data” and how it can transform the way we make business decisions. But what is it actually? And the more important question: can it benefit your business in some way?

On September 25th, 2013, Aptera conducted a webinar that addressed these questions, going beyond the buzz. Here’s a brief overview of what we discussed:

Big Data is a term that refers to data sets so large and complex that it becomes difficult to process them using on-hand database management tools or traditional data processing applications. Basically, the amount of data that becomes available when you start pooling resources in the cloud is so huge you need massively distributed cloud processors to do anything with it.

To really understand how Big Data might be used in a business setting, you first need to see how each of the individual pieces work. So we broke it down for you step by step. From using HDInsight in your Windows Azure account all the way to the pieces of the cloud structure that you need to get going. We also covered the topic of how Big Data in Windows Azure interacts with Excel.

What is HDInsight?

HDInsight is an offering from Microsoft available in Windows Azure that allows you to use Hadoop. Hadoop is an open-source software framework that is designed as a distributed work manager for huge amounts of data across a large number of systems, but it is also used for monitoring, failover, and scheduling. Microsoft created HDInsight to take advantage of certain protocols that are also open-source and can interact with Hadoop to help you manipulate the data. In a nutshell, HDInsight is a technology in Windows Azure that allows users to interact with Hadoop to process Big Data.

What Does The Future Hold?

I believe, as do most people in IT, and especially in Business Intelligence, that cloud computing and Big Data are going to have a very large impact in the future, whether you want it to or not. So we all want to be ready for it. You’ll want to have a good understanding what it is and what it can do for you.

Check out the archived webinar to go into greater detail about all of the above and much much more!
